Founded as a school for architecture, design, painting, and arts and crafts in Weimar in 1919, the Bauhaus moved to Dessau in 1925. It has influenced the modern age like no other movement. The Bauhaus building and master houses have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Walter Gropius and architecture
The Bauhaus building in Dessau was built in 1925/26 to plans by Walter Gropius. This captivating synthesis of glass, steel and concrete, in which each element is integrated without any unnecessary ornamentation, corresponds to its founder's philosophy that form should follow function. With their unique creative atmosphere, the studio building, workshops, vocational school and stage are the perfect embodiment of this architectural concept. The nearby master houses were also designed by Gropius. The famous Bauhaus artists Nagy, Feininger, Klee, Muche, Schlemmer and Kandinsky lived and worked in these studio homes.

The Bauhaus archive has an extensive collection of paintings, drawings and sculptures by Bauhaus masters and students. The collection of prints and drawings now consists of more than 8,500 sheets. The archive's specialist library, which has around 22,000 volumes and is open to the public, has the most extensive collection of literature associated with the Bauhaus movement and its artists, architects and designers. With approx. 50,000 photos and 1,500 Ektachromes (films), the fascinating picture archive on the history of the Bauhaus has become an essential point of contact for international research institutions and publishing companies.
